Doing well in their SATS at Key Stage 1 and 2 and curriculum tests at Key Stage 3 is unfortunately a fact of life for children today. The results your child gets at Key Stage 2 dictate what year group they will go into at secondary school and their Key Stage 3 test results provide schools with the information they need for what GCSEs they will sit. So like it or not, your child needs to do as well as he/she can.
Sadly, what schools cannot simply do is to give children individual coaching, either to help them do really well in the subject they excel in or, even more critically, in a subject they find hard to grasp. Children’s Typing Tutor CD-ROM
A few primary schools though are starting to teach their pupils to how to type. Head teacher Susan Mitchell from Giles Junior school, Stevenage, and who introduced typing into the school curriculum two years ago, says that as well as the obvious benefits of the children becoming proficient in something which is an essential skill nowadays, she was surprised at how much it has improved her pupils general command of English, particularly their sentence construction.
The reason for this, she discovered, is deceptively simple. If you think about it, all a child has to do when using a keyboard is to be able to recognise individual letters. Once they can do that they find constructing words and sentences relatively easy. Compare this to the child who uses a pen and therefore has to remember how each letter is formed and how each letter is linked to its neighbour to form words…
